Head Of Engineering

Position: Head of Engineering 
Location: Gateshead, Tyne and Wear 
Salary: £55K + 
Hours: Monday – Friday 38 Hours Per Week 
Contract: Permanent

My client, a well-established independent commercial vehicle workshop, is on the lookout for an experienced and organised Workshop Manager to lead their Gateshead-based team.

This is leadership role focused on driving quality, productivity, and efficiency across multiple Depots in the North East.

What you’ll be doing in your new Head of Engineering role:

• Define and lead the engineering strategy across multiple sites, ensuring consistency, effectiveness, and future readiness.
• Hold overall responsibility for engineering standards, governance, and assurance, with a strong focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and asset reliability.
• Develop and strengthen leadership capability by coaching Engineering Managers and supporting high-performing technical teams.
• Champion a proactive safety mindset and drive continuous improvement throughout all engineering operations.
• Partner closely with operational, commercial, and central support teams to ensure engineering priorities are aligned with wider organisational goals.

The successful Head of Engineering will have:

• An experienced senior engineering leader with a strong track record in a complex operational environment.
• In-depth knowledge of fleet, asset, or vehicle maintenance operations.
• A credible and confident people leader, able to inspire, challenge, and develop both managers and frontline teams.
• Commercially minded, with experience driving efficiency, cost control, and performance improvement.
• Deeply committed to safe working practices, regulatory compliance, and high-quality outcomes.
• A clear and persuasive communicator, comfortable engaging with stakeholders at all levels, including senior leadership.
• Relevant engineering qualification (HNC/HND or equivalent) desirable; formal leadership or management training is an advantage.
• Full UK driving licence required.
