Description
Role: Gates and Barriers Engineer
Location: West Yorkshire
Salary: £20ph (Negotiable for the right candidate) + Door to Door
Shift: Monday – Friday (40 hours)
Overtime: Offered at 1.5x and 2x
On Call: 1/5 weeks
My client, a respected nationwide specialist provider of security, fire safety, automation, access and infrastructure solutions, supporting commercial, industrial, construction and facilities management sectors across the UK. Is looking to recruit a skilled and motivated Gates and Barriers Engineer. This is a permanent, field-based role offering consistent work, a local patch, and the opportunity to expand your technical knowledge.
As a Gates and Barriers Engineer, you will be responsible for
Engineering & Technical
Diagnose, repair, service and maintain Automated gates (sliding, swing, cantilever), Barriers & bollards, Roller shutters, Automatic doors and access control interfaces
Carry out safe fault?finding on electrical, mechanical and control systems
Complete installations and upgrades in line with manufacturer specifications
Commission systems and hand over correctly to clients
Identify recurring faults and recommend permanent engineering fixes (not temporary repairs)
Safety & Compliance
Ensure full compliance with BS EN 12453 / BS EN 12445
Machine Directive & HSE guidance
Carry out and document risk assessments
Ensure safety edges, photocells, force testing and emergency releases are correctly installed and operational
Stop unsafe systems and report risks immediately
On?Call & Contract Support
Participate in a fair and structured on?call rota
Attend breakdowns with the expectation of first?time fix
Support high?value contracts to ensure uptime and client confidence
Reduce repeat visits, FOC jobs, and escalation incidents
Reporting & Communication
Complete accurate job reports, service sheets, and certification
Clearly explain faults and repairs to clients professionally
Feed back technical issues, training gaps, or product failures to management
Support security teams with guidance where required (without replacing engineering responsibility)
The successful Gates and Barriers Engineer will have the following experience
Proven experience as a gates / barriers / automation engineer
Strong knowledge of automation control panels (e.g. NICE, FAAC, CAME, BFT, etc.)
Safety devices and force testing
Electrical fault?finding (single & three phase desirable)
Mechanical competence beyond welding alone
Ability to work independently and take ownership of jobs
Demonstrable record of reducing call?backs and repeat failures
Full UK driving licence
Essential or Willing to Obtain Gate Safe Aware / Gate Safe Approved DHF or equivalent safety training and Electrical qualification (NVQ / City & Guilds desirable)
Desirable qualifications would be IPAF / PASMA / CSCS and Manufacturer certifications
