Position: Assistant Engineering Manager

Salary: £52,000

Kemp Recruitment is working in partnership with a leading UK passenger transport operator to recruit an experienced Assistant Engineering Manager for one of its busy engineering depots in Preston.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established organisation operating a large fleet of vehicles, where you’ll play a key role in supporting the Engineering Manager and ensuring the workshop delivers the highest standards of safety, reliability, and engineering excellence.

The Role As Assistant Engineering Manager, you’ll support the day-to-day management of a busy engineering operation responsible for maintaining a fleet of approximately 129 vehicles.

Working closely with the Engineering Manager and wider depot management team, you’ll help drive workshop performance, ensure compliance, and lead a team of skilled engineers to deliver an efficient and cost-effective maintenance operation.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the Engineering Manager with the daily running of the engineering department.
• Supervise and motivate engineering staff to achieve high performance and productivity.
• Ensure the fleet is maintained to the highest standards of safety, reliability, and presentation.
• Manage and monitor preventative maintenance schedules to maximise vehicle availability.
• Ensure all maintenance activities comply with statutory regulations and company policies.
• Promote a strong health and safety culture throughout the workshop.
• Work collaboratively with depot management to improve operational performance and engineering efficiency.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and help achieve departmental objectives within budget.

The Ideal Candidate
We’re looking for an experienced engineering professional who has:

• Previous experience in a supervisory or management role within a workshop environment.
• A strong background in fleet maintenance, ideally within the PSV, HGV, bus, coach, or commercial vehicle sectors.
• Excellent technical knowledge and diagnostic ability.
• Experience leading engineering teams and managing workshop performance.
• A sound understanding of preventative maintenance programmes.
• Good knowledge of health and safety legislation and engineering compliance.
• Strong communication, organisational, and leadership skills.
• A proactive approach with commercial awareness and a commitment to continuous improvement.
