How to become an HGV Technician
Becoming an HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) mechanic involves specific qualifications and training. Here are the first key steps:
- The correct Driving Licence: The first step is to obtain a valid driving licence. You’ll need a full car license and a CPC. A CPC is Driver Certificate of Professional Competence – this a professional driving qualification. It’s essential if you drive an HGV, bus, or coach as the main part of your job. The CPC consists of five tests, covering theory, case studies, off-road exercises, and on-road driving.
- Certified Training Program: Next, complete a certified training program. You can find these programs at colleges or technical schools.
- Apprenticeship: Consider an apprenticeship as a Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (level 3). This apprenticeship involves inspecting and repairing heavy vehicles and trailers. It’s equivalent to an A-level qualification and typically lasts 36 months.
Types of certifications in HGV Mechanics
Within the field of HGV mechanics, there are specialised certifications you can pursue. Here are a few:
- IRTEC (Institute of Road Transport Engineers) Certification: IRTEC offers various levels of certification for technicians working on commercial vehicles. These certifications validate your skills in areas like vehicle inspection, maintenance, and repair.
- Manufacturer-Specific Certifications: Some HGV manufacturers provide training programs and certifications for their specific vehicles. For example, if you work with Volvo trucks, you can seek Volvo-specific certifications.
Other things HGV Mechanics need to consider
Remember to renew your HGV licence every five years (annually after age 65) and complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years to stay qualified.
If you’re returning to HGV or bus driving, there are specific pathways based on your previous experience.
